A few decades ago, Cambodia was regarded as a war-torn nation wracked by the Khmer Rouge's control, horror, and extreme poverty, which cut it off from the outside world.

While travelling the hardest thing for me is trying to guess how much cash I'm going to need before I leave home. Most times I over guess which isn't a huge issue if you are buying a currency that won't depreciate before you come back.

While in Phnom Penh I was interested to see what the hotel we were staying at recommended that I do. Upon speaking with the front desk they handed me a couple of brochures. I have not done these excursions myself so I'm not sure what the quality of them is but if the hotel recommended them, I hope that they are worth while.

From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, when the Khmer Rouge began their reign of terror and genocide, Cambodia experienced a dramatic decline. After the Khmer Rouge had killed or starved up to 20% of the people and had been finally driven from power, the country descended into a lawless wasteland with everything it entails.

One thing that I found very difficult in Cambodia and Thailand is how cheap the different spa treatments are. Now at home treatments will set me back easily C$ 75+ but in these countries, it was under U$ 10 including tip.

Before COVID travel to Cambodia was increasing as it became even easier to travel to the country. As tourism grew, things like roads started to improve which increased the use of buses, taxis, and motodrop (known as Moto's) as using the roads were more comfortable without all the pot holes.

Cambodia is famous for its strange floating villages that have become tourist attractions because of its uniqueness. The villages are constructed by the residents who live next to Tonle Sap Lake and floating is a way to keep up with the river's seasonal variations.

Cambodia is well known for the Khmer Rouge genocide that killed an estimated 1.5 to 3 million people between 1975 - 1979. In the heart of Phenom Penh is the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (formerly S-21 aka Security Office 21), where more than 17,000 people were killed with the youngest being a two year old child.
