Since the USVI are part of the US we debated renting a car but since we are on vacation and wanting to relax we decided against it.
Heading to the USVI I was wondering what I could expect upon arriving and what is the culture like? I found this information very helpful and hope that you do as well.
While exploring the island I did come across a free magazine that had recommended a few things for us to do. According to Virgin Island This Week, these are the top five things to do in St. Johns.
Most people when they head out the Caribbean are wanting beach, cruise, sailing, shopping, or some sort of relaxing escape. For me, I cannot just be stuck on an all-inclusive for days on end and need to do something.
As I've mentioned before St. Johns is known for it's beaches and while they are still recovering from the "Bad Sisters" (Hurricanes Irma & Maria), once they have recovered the amazing hiking trails will be back open.
Arriving on the island there is not a lot to do besides head to the beach or shop at some of the local duty free shops. The closest spot to the ferry depot is Mongoose Junction. This outdoor tree house inspired shopping center is made up of stone and mahogany with winding walk ways with shops, art galleries, as well as restaurants hidden around various corners.
When I was looking at our cruise the main thing that I did not want to do was to book excursions through the cruise line as no they are more expensive than going direct. However since we had an onboard credit that we weren't going to use for anything else there was no reason for us not to use it for this reason as it would save us money from paying out of pocket for the cheaper excursions.
All the restaurants on the island, the type of food they offer, where on the island they are, and what service they offer.
If you are headed to St. Johns or if you are wanting to explore the island then you will have to take a ferry to get there. The schedule listed below is as of 2018 and things can change depending on the weather as well as season. Check out the most recent schedule...
Most people don't think about doing anything besides shopping and hitting the beach when they head to St. Thomas but there are other things to do on this island paradise.
When it comes to shopping a lot of people head to the USVI as the American's are allowed to bring back more items than anywhere else due to the higher duty free allowance here.
With all the beaches on St. Thomas and so little time it is hard to decide where to go but luckily I came across an article in Virgin Island This Week that listed the top 11 beaches on the island and they also included a quick view chart as well. Hopefully this will help you decide where you want to go.
If you are in Christiansted and are wanting to explore the area then why not do a self-walking tour? The city area is not very large so it is easy to wander and see everything.
If you are headed to St. Croix or maybe you are debating heading there then it is always helpful to have an idea as to where to start. While the island is the largest in the USVI it is still small with limited selections of various businesses depending on what you need.
While cruise ships usually have spa's on them you might want to experience the local flavor, get off the ship for a bit, or save some money. Whatever you decide there are a lot of place on St. Croix that you can visit to get things done.
When it comes to taking a taxi in St. Croix, it is a little different than in Canada or the US. The first thing that surprised us was that cab's are not exclusive to just you if you are hiring them (unless you buy out the cab) which means that the driver can pick up other people along the way until the cab is full.
When it comes to travel, supporting the local community is very important and one of the best ways to do this is to visit the local shops and buy locally made souvenirs. While there are a lot of shops dotting the island, the main five that are run by locals and promote locals are:
I'm sure that you've already checked out my posts on where to stay, what to do, and where to shop so of course the next natural thing to look at is where to eat. Food makes the world go round I think as we all need it and there are so many different flavours out there to be enjoyed.
This is just one day out of an entire trip. The rest of the trip can be found on the "Cruising" page below.
