Surprising Things to do at Disney World

by Female Abroad

Whether it is your first time or 17th time heading to Disney World there is a lot you can do while there that you might not even realize that you can do. As things change year to year, this list of activities may change as well as the dates so always check out Disney's website or give them a call for more information. Prices are 2020.

Foodie Experiences

Borma & Jika

Lead by the Lodge's Cultural Rep's, this 30 minute tour takes you around both restaurants with an emphasis on the types of food they serve, the decorl/design, and the African influences. At the end you will also receive free samples. This is a first come, first serve free tour that leaves the Boma podium at 4pm daily.

ShotSki

looking for a different way to drink then just at Epcot? The Boathouse in Disney Springs features a ShotSki drink board.

A5 Wagyu Beef

Head to Morimoto in Disney Springs to enjoy certified, imported A5 Japanese Wagyu Beef.

Dine with an Expert - As of 2021, it seems like this has been put on hold.

(Availability and prices change seasonally.)

A great way to learn more about how Disney's creative side works (and you are over 14) then head over to the Brown Derby in Hollywood Studio or Citricos at the Grand Floridian to enjoy a 4 course meal (not included in dining plans) with an imaginer who can answer most /all of your questions. To dine with an Imagineer more info can be found here.

If you are more into Animals then head over to Sanaa in Kidani Village for a 4-course lunch with an animal expert who can answer you questions on the animals as well as how Disney cares for them. More info here.

Surprise Cake/cupcakes

Looking for a special surprise? Celebrating something special? Disney can create customer cakes (at least 48 hours notice) that can be delivered to your hotel or the restaurant you are dining at. If cupcakes are more your thing then Sprinkles Cupcakes can be delivered as well. For more information visit Disney's Cake FAQ page here.

Dine-In Movie

AMC in Downtown Disney features a movie theatre that allows you to eat while you watch a film. There is also a button at your seat that you can press at any time during the movie to have a server bring you anything on the menu (snacks, pizza, burgers, desserts, and alcoholic / non-alcoholic drinks).

Camp Fire Cooking

Every night there is a free movie and sing-along at Fort Wilderness hosted by Chip and Dale. To continue with the camping feel, there is a campfire that you can roast marshmallows over while music plays before the movie begins.

Make a Cast Member's Day

Did you receive exceptional service / help? Let Disney know and share it with the member. Head to the Disney World Twitter page (@WDWToday) and use the hashtag #CastCompliment to bring it to Disney's attention.

Water Experiences

Scuba & Dinning

Interested in Scuba diving or eating with the fishies? Head over to Epcot where you can eat at the Coral Reef restaurant while looking into the large aquarium (with over 6000 sea creatures) it is built around (also home to the Nemo ride). If you have your Scuba certification and want to get closer to the fish then you can jump in on a Scuba Dive of this massive aquarium (U$ 179/person + tax).

Surfing

If you are over 8 years old, head over to Typhoon Lagoon where you can learn to surf by two professional instructors. Lessons are held on certain days at certain times so make sure to call before hand. (U$ 165/person + tax).

Animal Experiences

Horses

If horses are your thing there are a few different ways you can enjoy them in the park at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch at the Fort Wilderness Resort. Depending on the age of your party you can go on a 45-minute horseback trail ride (U$ 46/person + tax, 9+ years), carriage rides (U$ 45 - 64/carriage), and wagon rides (U$ 5-8/person + tax, 3+ years).

Safari

certain times of the year, you can go on a night time safari in the Animal Kingdom. I was excited for this thinking that we would see a lot more animals due to some being nocturnal so we went. It is very dark in the safari area so you couldn't see much and the animals you could were asleep. Maybe we went on a bad night but I wouldn't recommend it.

VIP Tour

If you love animals or want to learn more about them then join the Wild Africa Trek for a three hour, guided, behind the scenes tour of the safari area. This is a small group tour that fills up quickly over the summer months so make sure to pre-book before you go. (U$ 189-249/person + tax; price is season dependent).

Services

Hair Cut

On main street in the Magic Kingdom there is a barber where you can get a hair cut. If you have a little one, you can also go here to get sprinkled in magic pixie dust (glitter).

Learn to Draw

Every day between 9am-4pm you can join a 30minute long course at the Art of Animation Resort which will teach you to draw a Disney character. Subjects vary so just give the hotel's concierge a call before going over. As of 2021 it sounds like they are no longer hosting these classes at the resort but you can take a class in the Animal Kingdom (you will need a valid park admission).

Get Massaged

Running around in the sun all day can take a lot out of a person but fear not, there are various hotels around the entire property that actually feature spa's where you can get massaged.

Active Experiences

Hot Air Ballooning

As long as it is not windy, you can head up into the sky in a hot airplane from Disney Springs. we tried to do this but every time we went (for a whole week) it was too windy to go up. (U$ 12-18/person + tax)

Racing

I have no idea who Richard Petty is but he has a NASCAR driving experience at Disney that would allow you to take a NASCAR or an Exotic Sports Car for 8 to 50 laps (starting at U$ 169/person + tax).

Segway

Like most US cities, Disney has a Segway tour too. Head over to the Wilderness Lodge to jump on these bad boys before hitting either the paths or the trails.

Surrey Bike

rent a covered two or four person bike for a petal around the waterfront boardwalks and/or woodsy paths (U$ 25/bike including tax)

Sail Away

Rent an entire pontoon boat from the Yacht and Beach Club or Boardwalk Marina and you can head into the lake at Epcot. If you do this at the right time, you can watch Epcot's fireworks that evening from the lake. If you are wanting to make sure you have the boat for the fireworks call (407) WDW-PLAY a maximum 180 days (5 months) prior to the date you are wanting to rent it for. Each boat fits a max of 10 people and prices start around U$ 350.
