Magic Kingdom - Things You Didn't Know

by Female Abroad

The Magic Kingdom is such a magical place with lots to explore, see, and do. On my first trip here I ended up taking the behind the scene's tour which took us all over (and under) the park. Here are some of the tidbits I picked up from the tour as well as other things I've learned along the way.

General

Coins tossed into water features & fountains are collected several times per year and are donated to Children's Charities in Central Florida.

Because of Florida's high water table, the park is actually built on the second floor. The first floor of the park are the Utilidor (all the tunnels where the non-magical things happen)

Characters only found in the Magic Kingdom: Gaston, Fairy Godmother, Anastasia, Drucilla, Aladdin (Jasmine is at Epcot), Rapunzel, Tiana, Tinkerbell, Elena, Arial, Cinderella, Merida, Peter Pan, Pooh, Tiger, Mickey & Minnie in celebration costumes

If you stay until park close there is a light show on the Castle called the "Goodnight Kiss" or "Kiss Goodnight" which is to send everyone on home

The water in the rides are all connected so if something falls into the water, good luck getting it back! (Another fun thing, when we were behind Splash Mountain there was a dead crow in the water tank but the ride was still in operation)

if someone dies in the park, they are not declared dead until they get to the hospital so no one has technically died at DisneyWorld...

Main Street

At Le Chapeau, pick up the receiver of the old phone on the wall and you can listen in on conversations the locals are having on Main Street

The Harmony Barber Shop has a "my first hair cut" package or if you just want a little extra magic, they will put some fairy dust into your hair from their magic wand

Signs in the windows on the upper floors of main street are names of people that helped create the park and some of the fake business names that were used to buy the land for the park

If you turn down the back alley by the Crystal Art Shop you'll find a quiet area to sit but also hear the locals practicing singing and piano

at 5pm daily there is a flag retreat ceremony at the Main Street Flag Pole. A Veteran who is visiting the park will be randomly selected to take in the ceremony. The flag on this pole is the only one that is an actual American flag so it has to be taken down every night. The other flags that you see are not real American flags as they are either missing a star or a stripe so they do not get taken down

at Casey's Corner the pianist Jim has been doing it for over 30 years

Tony Towns Square Restaurant has the pawprints of Lady & the Tramp in cement

Adventureland

the chess board outside the Pirates of the Caribbean, if you look closely, the pieces are in a Stale Mate

Club 33 just opened a location in DW and the entrance is found just over the bridge into Adventureland on the right hand side

Skipper Canteen - head towards the S.E.A. room and check out the bookshelves which are a hidden entrance (the Jungle Book is the lever) but you'll also notice the books have funny titles. Ask a Cast Member to sit in this room as it is very well themed. Most of the time they will let you unless it is full / rented

Frontierland

Splash Mountain Hidden Mickey - just as you are heading up to the exit before the big drop, the rocks to the left that partially cover the opening is a side profile of Mickey's face

Hoedown Happening Show - this is not listed in the times guide but special characters will come on out and join in on a Hoe Down (ask the Cast Members for times)

Liberty Square

on the Riverboat there is a special room, head to the second floor deck, go inside, and there will usually be available seating as people will usually only go up on deck as they want a view

Haunted Mansion has several Easter Eggs.

- Wedding Ring: the Bride's wedding band is found in the concrete walkway near the water fountain that sprays by the separation of the FastPass/Stand By lines (near the garbage can)

- Madame Leota's Gravestone will pop open her eyes and look around

- Pet Cemetery, you'll find Mr. Toad which used to be one of the rides in Fantasyland but it was replaced with Winnie the Pooh

- at night, if you look up, you may see people walking around in the upper windows

the Liberty Square Oak Tree is a live tree that is over 100 years old. Within its branches are 13 lanterns which represent the original 13 colony's.

most of the windows have lanterns in them and this is a nod to American history where if a lantern was lit, the British were coming to attack America by sea (2 by land, 1 by sea)

Fantasyland

at the Tangles Restrooms the tree stump seating outside have phone charging stations, there is also a hidden Piscal in the river

Sword in the Stone - at various times throughout the day, people can try to pull the sword out of the stone (usually it is a little kid that is able to)

at the Little Mermaid ride there is a Hidden Mickey - outside of the entrance, there is a Steam Boat Willy made up of multiple rocks (very hard to see). To the left of the exit there is a Natalous which used to be a ride vehicle for the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride which used to be in this spot.

Pinocchio Village House - go into the dining house, head all the way to the back and turn left. Here you will find the Village House Wish Book, write down a wish for the Blue Fairy to grant!

at Cinderella's Fountain (behind Cinderella's Castle) if you look at the fountain from a child's height, the crown in the mural sits perfectly on top of Cinderella's head so technically only children know that Cinderella is truly a Queen.

there have been alligators found in Cinderella's Castle's moat

Tomorrowland

the People Mover goes inside of Space Mountain and here you will see a view diagrams, one of which is the original Epcot model

Carousel of Progress, there is a hidden photo of Walt Disney's daughter's bedroom. There are also four hidden Mickey's in the final scene - 2 under the Christmas tree and 2 on the kitchen counter. If you look closely at Grandma you may recognize her from the ballroom scene of the Haunted Mansion

the metal palm trees you see around have a story, they are solar powered and store energy in the coconuts but if a tree doesn't have any coconuts, someone has already harvested them for the power
