When it comes to taking a taxi in St. Croix, it is a little different than in Canada or the US. The first thing that surprised us was that cab's are not exclusive to just you if you are hiring them (unless you buy out the cab) which means that the driver can pick up other people along the way until the cab is full. While this is a great way to meet people it is confusing the first time that it happens. As cabbing on the island is a little different I thought that I would enlighten you with handy information we discovered while on the island.
The island of St. Croix has three taxi companies:
Rudy's Taxi & Tours: 340-77-6803
Epidel Taxi & Tours: 340-643-205 / amadordelerme2015@gmail.com
St. Croix Taxi Association: 340-778-1088
If you are at the airport, cabs are fairly easy to catch and in each town there is a taxi stand (on Christiansted it's on King St near Government House, Frederiksted is by the fort).
When it comes to costs they are preset by the Taxi Commission and approved by the VI Legislature. The only way to tell if it's a licensed taxi is by the dome light and the letters "TP" on the license plate. None of the taxi's have meters so check the posted rate and confirm before jumping in. As of 2018, prices are as follow:

Other fare calculations:
- If you are not headed to any of these places then the rate will usually be what the cost of the closest point to the listed locations would be.
- Roundtrip fares are possible. Double the price of your location (ex. airport to Christiansted $32) plus U$ 1/minute the driver has to wait
- Drivers are also not allowed to refuse any fare unless you are drunk, disorderly, or have a pet (not including seeing eye dog) that is not in a kennel.
- If you do have a pet in a kennel there is a fee: U$ 30 for a large kennel and U$ 20 for a small.
- If you need to use the radio or make a phone call using the driver's equipment, the charge for this would be the base fair plus 1/3 (ex. airport to Christiansted is $16 + U$ 5 (1/3 of 16))
- Booking the entire cab is possible if you don't want people to jump in with you, the cost of this would be the same as paying for four people
- Bringing luggage? expect a charge of U$ 2/bag and if you are bringing a large bag (30" X 29" or more) it would be charged U$ 4
Renting by the hour to get around to lots of places is possible
Mini-Van / Sedan for up to 4 people: U$ 40
Van for up to 14 people: U$ 55
Safari bus for up to 25 people: U$ 80
if you need something larger then you will have to negotiate with the operator
Sightseeing? three hour guided tours are available
1 to 4 passengers: U$ 100
5+: U$ / person
Now that you know what to expect for pricing, what if something goes wrong or you have other questions about the taxi experience on the island? You can actually call the VI Legislature directly and speak with their Taxicab Division at 340-773-2226 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm local time).
