Random Apps

Female Abroad

Random App's that you may find amusing or very helpful either traveling, in life, or planning.

Sit or Squat

Type: Comfort

Overview: how clean is the local public bathroom? Charmin though it would be good to know

Platform: iOS & google play

Cost: free

Description: see bathroom ratings to know if it is usually clean enough to sit

Female Abroad Review: This marketing ploy started off as a great way to advertise toilet paper and then turned into a very helpful app. I like how it shows where the public bathrooms are as you never know when nature will call but the fact that you can see what is the preferred locations is very helpful. The downside is that everyone else can also see these preferred locations so some get used a little more often than not and the information is only as accurate when people take time to update it. They also only have about 100,000 restrooms so it's not quite worldwide but as the information is imputed by users, it is increasing. Bonus: it can also list if there are changing tables, accessible bathrooms, and more.

Circa World Time

Type: Tracker

Summary: keep track of all your time zones

Platform: iOs and Android

Reason to use: Circa is a beautiful and simple time zone tracker that lets you check what time it is where you are, and where you’re heading. You can also add your home time, in case you want to keep in touch with people back home. The app will show times that overlap where both parties should be awake

Female Abroad review: I have to say that it is really nice to be able to look at a simple coloured circle and know exactly what time it is where as well as be able to compare to where I am now / where I am going. It is really great for work as well since I know what time it is where each of my clients are travelling. It even allows me to set when my office hours are so I can see the time I'm in the office verses what time they'll be around. Plus I can link it with my calendar so it will update day by day.

When I first opened the app it took me a moment to figure out how to delete the preloaded cities but then I just happened to swipe right when sneezing and was presented with a garbage can.

With the cities, when I was looking for some random ones like "St. Johns", Antiqua it was not an option even if I kept or removed the "." or even spelt it out as "Saint", it just wanted an option. However all the major cities are in the app and it looks like pretty much all the US and Canadian ones are there as well. Since the city I wanted wasn't available I just picked a different one that was in the same time zone.

Truthfully if I wasn't in the travel industry or travelling to multiple places then I wouldn't use this app.

Splittr

Type: dining

Overview: splitting a bill? this app will calculate the total each person owes

Platform: iOs & Android

Cost: £1.49 (as of 2020)

Description: enter in the cost of the bill, select the currency, and the total will be split by the number of people entered. You can then adjust how much each person pays if it won't be an even split and you can change the currency if you will pay the full bill but they will pay you back when you get home.

Female Abroad Review: It is really annoying when you go out to dinner and then when the check arrives the restaurant tells you that they can't split a bill. These days most people don't have cash so usually the only other option is to either calculate who owes what and charge each card that amount or one person pays the full thing and the others pay them back. I'm always worried that I'll miscalculate something so Splittr is just the very basic, visual way of knowing that everyone is paying the correct amount. Is it worth the £1.49? Well that's just up to you. I don't eat out a lot so for me I didn't feel like I got my use out of one trip but maybe as the years go on....

Revolut

Type: Banking / Currency & Travel Insurance

Summary: online only banking that offers better pricing and geolocation tracking to charge you for just the time you are out of the country

Platform: website ,iOs, and google play

Reason to use: save money

Pricing Structures: The have various accounts that include various account inclusions which can be found here

Female Abroad review: This company has set up in Europe and I've come across them on Instagram which make me a bit hesitant to sign up plus it's not available in Canada yet so I would not be able to. I did do a bit of research however and it looks like it is a very trust worthy company with easy to access customer service. They also are experienced in cryptocurrency so if you are looking at a company to handle it for you then Revolut might work. Have you ever used Revolut? What did you think?
